QuadChroma - Manual
===================

Deutsch: weiter unten, "QuadChroma - Handbuch".

QuadChroma puts one computer's screen on another - Mac or Windows, in
both directions. Sharp enough for text, fast enough for games. One app
per computer: it connects to other computers and lets them in.

Help: hello@quadchroma.tech - https://quadchroma.tech

Install
-------

Mac (macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon)
Open the DMG and drag QuadChroma into Applications. Start it from
there. macOS asks once whether to open an app from the internet:
  click "Open".

Windows (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit)
Run the setup. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC", click
"More info", then "Run anyway". Setup asks once for administrator
approval, opens the firewall for private networks and starts
QuadChroma. A QuadChroma that is already running - also in other
signed-in Windows accounts - is closed first. If one keeps running,
setup asks you to quit it and try again. Uninstalling works the same
way. Run setup while signed in at the PC itself: over Remote Desktop
alone, with nobody signed in at the PC, it cannot finish.
Rather not install? Unpack the portable ZIP completely and start
quadchroma.exe from that folder. Keep all its files together.

Install QuadChroma on every computer you want to use.

First start
-----------

1. Read the licence terms and click "Accept".
2. Choose how this computer uses QuadChroma:
"Enter licence key" share this computer
"Try free for 7 days" share it now, buy later
"Client only" only connect to other computers - free
You can change this any time under "Licence ...".

QuadChroma then lives in the menu bar (Mac) or the notification area
(Windows). Closing the window keeps it running there. To quit, use the
icon's menu.

Licence
-------

Connecting to other computers is free. Sharing a computer - letting
others see and control it - needs a licence or the trial.

- A licence covers one major version (for example 1.0 to 1.9) on two
computers, Mac and Windows mixed. A subscription covers every version
for as long as it runs.
- Activate: "Licence ..." on the start screen or in the icon's menu,
paste your key (QC-...), click "Activate".
- QuadChroma confirms the licence about once a week. Offline, sharing
keeps running for up to 30 days, and the app tells you in time.

Moving to another computer
- On the old one: "Licence ..." > "Remove this computer". Then activate
  on the new one.
- Old one gone or broken? Activate on the new one and pick the computer
it replaces - or remove it under "Manage devices (web)".
- After the Migration Assistant or a restore: "Activate here".
- Too many moves in a short time are paused; the app shows until when.

Your licences and devices: https://lizenz.quadchroma.tech/portal/

Connect
-------

1. QuadChroma runs on both computers, in the same network (or through
your VPN). Sharing is on at the one you want to reach.
2. Open QuadChroma and click that computer in the list. Not listed?
Type its address or its device ID.
3. The first time, enter the password shown in the QuadChroma menu of
the other computer. Or click "Ask for 'Allow'" - then someone there
clicks "Allow". From then on it connects straight away.

Sessions open full screen until you change it with F11. "Disconnect" is
in the menu (F10). The menu's "Computers" tab jumps straight to another
computer.

-------------------

"Share this Mac" / "Share this PC" is on the start screen and in the
icon's menu. The icon's menu also has:

- Device ID and password - click to copy, then pass them on.
- "Change password ..." and "New random password".
- "Allowed devices" - remove one and it needs the password again.
- "Change device name ...".
- "Start at login" (Mac) / "Start with Windows" - ready after every
restart. On Windows, after installing with the setup, allowed devices
get in even before anyone signs in.
- "Prevent sleep while QuadChroma is running".

Mac: the first time you share, macOS asks for Screen Recording and
Accessibility. Allow both. On macOS 15 and later, also allow the local
network.

The shared computer needs a screen: a monitor, an HDMI dummy plug or a
virtual display.

Full screen and picture
-----------------------

- F11: full screen on or off. QuadChroma remembers your choice. On a
Mac, full screen hides the menu bar and the Dock.
- Ctrl+Esc: back to the start screen.
- Menu: F10, or hold Esc for two seconds.
"Picture": data rate, frame rate, "Gaming mode" for the lowest
  latency, sound.
"Display": full screen, pixel exact, statistics.
- While you are connected, the other computer switches its screen to
your resolution - and back when you leave. Don't want that? Menu >
  "Picture" > "Adapt host resolution".
- Copy and paste text and files between the computers as usual.

Keyboard
--------

Keys travel by position, so your own layout just works - umlauts
included.

Windows PC controlling another computer (while the QuadChroma window
is in front):
- The Windows key, Alt+Tab and the other system shortcuts go to the
other computer, not to your PC. Menu > "Shortcuts" > "Send system
keys to the host" switches this off for that computer.
- "Emergency exit" in the same tab shows the shortcut that hands the
system keys back to your PC at once - Ctrl+Alt+F12. Click it to
  choose another one.
- Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Del always stay on your PC.

Windows PC controlling a Mac:
- Windows key = Command. Win+C and Win+V copy and paste on the Mac,
Win+Tab switches apps, Win+Space opens Spotlight.
- Ctrl stays Control. Want Ctrl+C as on Windows? Menu > "Shortcuts" >
"Swap Ctrl and Cmd": Ctrl then acts as Command, the Windows key as
  Control.
- AltGr = Option. AltGr+L gives @ on a German Mac layout.
- PrtSc = screenshot of the whole screen (Cmd+Shift+3),
  Shift+PrtSc = a selection (Cmd+Shift+4),
  Ctrl+PrtSc = the screenshot tool (Cmd+Shift+5).
Also in the menu: "Shortcuts" > "Screenshot on the Mac".
- To lock the Mac: menu > "Shortcuts" > "Lock Mac" (Ctrl+Cmd+Q).
- Keyboard type: the first time you connect to a Mac, QuadChroma asks
which keyboard it has - ISO (an extra key next to the left Shift key,
e.g. German), ANSI (e.g. US) or JIS (Japanese). Then ^ and < land in
the right place. Change it in menu > "Shortcuts" > "Keyboard type".

Mac controlling another computer (while the QuadChroma window is in
front and the mouse is over the picture):
- Cmd and shortcuts such as Cmd+Tab, Cmd+Space and Cmd+Q go to the
other computer, not to your Mac - to another Mac as Cmd, to a
Windows PC as the Windows key. Menu > "Shortcuts" > "Send system keys
to the host" switches this off for that computer.
- Emergency exit: Ctrl+Option+Esc hands Cmd back to your Mac at once.
Choose another shortcut in the same tab.
- The first time, macOS may ask you to allow QuadChroma under Input
Monitoring and Accessibility (System Settings > Privacy & Security).
Until then Cmd stays on your Mac.

Mac controlling Windows:
- Cmd = Windows key. Cmd alone opens the Start menu, Cmd+E File
  Explorer, Cmd+D the desktop.
- Menu > "Shortcuts" > "Swap Ctrl and Cmd": Cmd then acts as Ctrl on
Windows (Cmd+C copies, Cmd+V pastes) and Ctrl as the Windows key.
- The right Option key works as AltGr. F13 works as Print Screen.
- The keyboard type of your Mac is detected automatically; if ^ and <
land in the wrong place, set it in menu > "Shortcuts".

Controlling Windows, from a Mac or a PC: "Lock Windows" in menu >
"Shortcuts" locks that PC. "Send Ctrl+Alt+Del" opens its security
screen - it appears when the PC runs QuadChroma with its service (the
Windows setup installs it).

Shortcuts
---------

F8 capture or release the mouse (games usually do it for you)
  F9 statistics
F10 menu - or hold Esc for two seconds
  F11 full screen
  F12 pixel exact
Ctrl+Esc back to the start screen

All of them are in the menu too, tab "Shortcuts".

Updates
-------

"Updates" on the start screen. QuadChroma checks daily. Tick "Install
updates automatically" if you like - an update waits until no
connection is active; while one is active in another signed-in
account, it tries again every hour. "Check now" looks right away.
Portable Windows copy: download the new ZIP.

Troubleshooting
---------------

The other computer is not in the list
- Is QuadChroma running there, with sharing on?
- Same network? Guest Wi-Fi often keeps devices apart.
- Windows, portable copy: allow QuadChroma in the firewall for private
  networks.
- Mac: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network: allow
  QuadChroma.
- Or type the address or device ID.

Black picture, or mouse and keyboard do nothing on a Mac you control
- On that Mac: System Settings > Privacy & Security - allow QuadChroma
under Screen Recording and Accessibility. Its QuadChroma menu shows
what is missing. Still no luck? Quit QuadChroma there and start it
  again.

"No display is active on the host"
- Connect a monitor, an HDMI dummy plug or a virtual display there.

Sharing stopped
- Open "Licence ..." - it says why. Often the computer was offline for
too long: connect it to the internet and click "Check again".
- Subscription expired? Renew it under "My licences" on
  quadchroma.tech, then click "Check again".

"Port 9001 is used by another program"
- Another program, or a second copy of QuadChroma, holds that port on
this computer. Quit that program or the second copy.

Picture stutters or lags
- Use a cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Leave the data rate on "Automatic". For
  games, switch on "Gaming mode".

Still stuck? Write to hello@quadchroma.tech and attach the file
protokoll.txt. You'll find it here:
  Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/QuadChroma/
  Windows: %APPDATA%\QuadChroma\

Uninstall
---------

First free the licence slot: "Licence ..." > "Remove this computer".
- Windows: Settings > Apps > QuadChroma > Uninstall.
- Mac: quit QuadChroma in its menu, drag it from Applications to the
  Trash.
Your settings stay in the folder named above. Delete it if you no
longer need them.

QuadChroma - Handbuch
=====================

Hilfe: hello@quadchroma.tech - https://quadchroma.tech/de/

Installieren
------------

Erster Start
------------

1. Lizenzbedingungen lesen, „Akzeptieren“ klicken.
2. Wähle, wie dieser Computer QuadChroma nutzt:
   „Lizenzschlüssel eingeben“ diesen Computer freigeben
„7 Tage kostenlos testen“ gleich freigeben, später kaufen

   Freigabe an.

Bedienungshilfen. Beides erlauben. Ab macOS 15 auch das lokale
Netzwerk erlauben.

Der freigegebene Computer braucht einen Bildschirm: Monitor,
HDMI-Dummy oder virtuellen Bildschirm.

Vollbild und Bild
-----------------

- F11: Vollbild an oder aus. QuadChroma merkt sich deine Wahl. Am Mac
blendet das Vollbild Menüleiste und Dock aus.
- Strg+Esc (am Mac Ctrl+Esc): zurück zum Startbildschirm.
- Menü: F10, oder Esc zwei Sekunden halten.
„Bild“: Datenrate, Bildrate, „Spielmodus“ für die geringste
  Latenz, Ton.
  „Anzeige“: Vollbild, pixelgenau, Statistik.

Tastatur
--------

Tasten gehen nach ihrer Position hinüber. Dein Layout funktioniert
also einfach - Umlaute inklusive.

sofort an deinen PC zurückgibt - Strg+Alt+F12.

  Spotlight.
- Strg bleibt Control. Lieber Strg+C wie unter Windows? Menü >
„Tastenkombinationen“ > „Strg und Cmd tauschen“: Dann wirkt Strg als
Befehlstaste und die Windows-Taste als Control.
- AltGr = Option. AltGr+L ergibt @ mit deutschem Mac-Layout.
- Druck = Bildschirmfoto des ganzen Bildschirms (Cmd+Umschalt+3),
  Umschalt+Druck = Auswahl (Cmd+Umschalt+4),
  Strg+Druck = das Bildschirmfoto-Werkzeug (Cmd+Umschalt+5).
Auch im Menü: „Tastenkombinationen“ > „Bildschirmfoto am Mac“.
- Den Mac sperrst du über Menü > „Tastenkombinationen“ > „Mac sperren“
  (Ctrl+Cmd+Q).

- Notausgang: Ctrl+Option+Esc gibt Cmd sofort an deinen Mac zurück.
(Systemeinstellungen > Datenschutz & Sicherheit). Bis dahin bleibt
  Cmd an deinem Mac.

Mac steuert Windows:
- Cmd = Windows-Taste.

  Netzwerke erlauben.
- Mac: Systemeinstellungen > Datenschutz & Sicherheit > Lokales
  Netzwerk: QuadChroma erlauben.

steuerst
- An diesem Mac: Systemeinstellungen > Datenschutz & Sicherheit -
QuadChroma unter Bildschirmaufnahme und Bedienungshilfen erlauben.
Sein QuadChroma-Menü zeigt, was fehlt. Klappt es trotzdem nicht?
QuadChroma dort beenden und neu starten.

„Am Host ist kein Bildschirm aktiv“
- Dort einen Monitor, HDMI-Dummy oder virtuellen Bildschirm
  anschließen.

Freigabe gestoppt

Datei protokoll.txt an. Sie liegt hier:
  Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/QuadChroma/
  Windows: %APPDATA%\QuadChroma\

Deinstallieren
--------------

Erst den Lizenzplatz freigeben: „Lizenz …“ > „Diesen Computer
abmelden“.
- Windows: Einstellungen > Apps > QuadChroma > Deinstallieren.
  Papierkorb ziehen.
Deine Einstellungen bleiben im oben genannten Ordner. Lösch ihn, wenn
du sie nicht mehr brauchst.
